THE DEVIL WE KNOW

C8, a harmful chemical that is in 99% of all humans.

When viewing, "The Devil We Know," I learned a lot. I did not even know about the chemicals in the day to day things that I use. From pots and pans, to floss, to even the water I drink, I am amazed to find out that there is a constant chemical in the water that I drink.. and to think that most people do not know about these chemicals, C8 and PFOA chemicals, scares me. Disease caused by water, air, soil, pollution are responsible for 9 million premature deaths annually. That is 16% of all global deaths. Exposures to contaminated water, air, and soil kill more people than smoking, hunger, natural disasters, war, aids, or malaria. That is crazy. PFA stands for Perfluoroalkoxy Polymer, which is a Chemical Compound that is resistant to strong mineral acids, inorganic bases, and inorganic oxidizing agents and to most of the organic compounds and their mixtures common in the chemical industry. That basically means that it will never leave the planet. AND ITS ALL OUR FAULT. There are more than 80,000 chemicals approved for use in the US, and very few of them have been tested for safety. In the documentary, a specific case was focused on in West Virginia. A man in the film talked about his experience when he was born with his deformity. He was born with only one nostril, and his tear ducts were deformed as well as his corniea in his left eye. He talked about how he looks determined how people treated him in school, and how worried he was with the idea of starting a family. To know and understand the risks of being exposed to these chemicals really makes me wonder how the Earth will be like in 20 years. It all scares me. But in order to make a change, it is very important to share this info with others. I will leave the link down below if you want to know more about these chemicals and what to do to stop it!

A NATURALIST- HENRY DAVID THOREAU

a picture of Henry David Thoreau https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Henry_ David_Thoreau_1862.jpeg Henry David Thoreau. WHO IS HE??? One naturalist that I really love learning more about is named Henry David Thoreau. He is known as an American writer, thinker, and naturalist.  His main focus was exploring deeper interest in nature. He kept a journal whilst exploring a place called Walden Pond, and later created a book called, Walden . His words were extremely powerful, and he ended up being one of the most powerful voices for the natural environment ( Walden.org). The main thing that motivated him was nature. He believed that nature could soothe all people much like different religions. He spent 2 years at Walden Pond, and showed throughout his writing how transcendentalism can impact a human being. Transcendentalism teaches that divinity pervades all nature and humanity, and its members hold progressive views on feminism and communal living. Ralph Waldo Emerson and Henry ...

ECOLOGICAL RESTORATION & RECOVERY OF TRADITIONAL ECOLOGICAL KNOWLEDGE

Recently, I attended an event lead by Dr. Chuck Stead called The Ramapough Mountain Guardians: Ecologial Restoration and the Recovery of Traditional Ecological Knowledge. This talk and presentation was located in the Alumni Center, in Norma Walker Hall. It was done on Monday, March 25th 4 to 5 pm. Dr. Chuck Stead has been an advocate on behalf of the Ramopough Lunnape Minsi nation for a while now. He witnessed first hand the degradation and environmental injustice that is pressed daily on the people of the land. He started an investigation into the dumping of hazardous wastes by Ford Motor Company. He lead a successful fight to uncover the actions of Ford Motor Company. He found lead paint traces all over the land of the Ramapough, which was later proved to be lead paint from Ford company dumping it there. Dr. Stead worked with many elders, particularly the Turtle Clan, to recover the impacted lands, as well as working with the Ramapo Government. He is a professional storyteller a...

ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACTS: FARMACOLOGY - BIODYNAMIC FARMING:

"WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE ORGANIC????"  Jubilee: What a Biodynamic Farmer Taught me about Rejuvenation , by Daphne Miller, M.D. The role of agriculture and the microbiome in ecological and human health, from the book  Farmacology, was an article that really interested me. The main topic was calcium, and how taking two daily vitamins of calcium is not anywhere near natural, and how the metabolic effects of the vitamin of calcium are not the same effects as calcium in food. These vitamins can be found in stores such as CVS, natural food stores, and the like. Most places claim that calcium supplements can positively affect your body, but your body does not recognize calcium in a manmade product, therefore, your body does not use the manmade calcium, and instead it turns into waste product. I learned this in my Nutrition Science class last semester, which was a very interesting class. Overall, the article stressed how biodynamic farming contrasts with a different type...
